Description
A total of 648 incidental catches of Black Sea cetaceans in fishing gear have been recorded in the northern Black Sea off the coasts of Crimea between 1997 and 2009. more

A total of 648 incidental catches of Black Sea cetaceans in fishing gear have been recorded within five projects implemented by the Brema Laboratory in the northern Black Sea off the coasts of Crimea between 1997 and 2009. Most cetacean bycatches on the record concurred with fishing seasons for Black Sea turbot and spiny dogfish and were registered in fishing areas near Evpatoria (western Crimea), Sevastopol-Balaklava (southwestern Crimea) and Feodosia (southeastern Crimea). More than 99% of the bycatches were lethal. The bycatches were recorded mainly by means of direct onboard examination of fishing nets (several 100s km) during ordinary fishing operations.
