The distribution of salinity and nutrients in the eastern part of the Southern Bight of the North Sea was compared with their distribution in a one mile wide area along the Dutch beach, called "beach-zone". A special sampling program was established, consisting of a general survey in the eastern part of the Southern Bight and a detailed survey of the beach-zone. It was found that salinity-gradient in the Southern Bight can be extrapolated into the beach-zone. Phosphate-posphorus, nitrate-nitrogen and nitrite-nitrogen were found to have steeper gradient in the beach zone. Very low reactive-silicate concentrations were found, particularly in the beach-zone. Outside the beach-zone a significant negative correlation was found between salinity and nutrient-gradients; inside this zone the correlation was slightly negative or nill.
