Abstract
Reported is about the life-cycle ofCotylurus erraticus in Europe. In the northern part of the IJsselmeer Valvala piscinalis was infected for 1,5-3% in the summer of 1973 by the species Cotylurus erraticus, Cotylus variegatus and C. platycephalus. For the first time, natural infections of the host are described for this species. Osmerus eperlanus is the most important second host for Cotylurus erraticus in this lake, infection is 100%. Larus ridibundus is an important third host. The life-cycle of Cotylurus erraticus was studied experimentally from metacercarium to cercarium. Development of the miracidia takes 13 days at 23°C, after which the eggs hatch without cold-shock. Valvata piscinalis cultured in the lab were succesfully infected by miradia ofCotylurus erraticus, and at 23°C the first cercaria are set free after 3 weeks. Also infections of Larus argentatus were succesful. The cercarium of Cotylurus erraticus is described in detail, as it differs partly from the description by OLSON (1970) from infections of Valvata lewisi. Description resembles closely those of other known cercaria from the sub-genus Ichthyocotylurus given by Odening (1969).
