Abstract
Isolated tissues of Callinectes sapidus show changes in the amino-acid catabolism when submitted to an osmotic stress. At the same time, modifications in the oxygen consumption and in the oxido-reduction level of the pyridine nucleotides can also be recorded. It is therefore proposed that the variation in oxygen consumption observed in many euryhaline invertebrates when withstanding an osmotic stress could be related, at least partly, to the changes in catabolic activity which occur during the process of cellular osmatic pressure adjustment.
