Abstract
The results of 5 years of cod egg surveys in the Southern Bight (North Sea) are analysed, taking into account normal distribution of the spawning processes in time, variable egg mortality and development rates, in order to estimate seasonal egg production. These survey estimates are compared qualitatively with catch per unit of effort indices of potential egg production by the mature biomass. The correlation coefficient is highly significant. Comparison with estimates of potential egg production by the actual catch and inherent estimates of fishing mortality suggests a possible underestimation of the egg production from the surveys by a factor 2.
