Abstract
Acerina cernua, collected in December 1971 and January 1972 from the IJsselmeer, was infected with Tetracotyle ovata (body cavity and pericardial cavity) and T. percaefluviatilis (air-bladder), Osmerus eperlanus, from the same lake, was infected with Tetracotyle intermedia (pericardial cavity) and to a lower intensity with Tetracotyle ovata. When ingested by Larus argentatus the metacercariae developed to patent adults: Tetracotyle ovata to Cotylurus p. platycephalus (cloaca) T. percaefluviatilis to C. variegatus (small intestine) T. intermedia to C. erraticus (small intestine). Eggs were collected from Cotylurus p. platycephalus and C. variegatus. After 21 -23 days at 20°C embryos were fully developed. Mother and daughter sporocysts developed in the operculate snail, Valvata piscinalis. Cercaria emerged 12 weeks after infection. Some type of immunity develops in gulls infected several times in the laboratory.
