Abstract
Incisocalliope aestuarius, a species of amphipod, is native to estuaries along the American Atlantic coast. By attachment to ship’s hulls or in their ballast water, this species was introduced in Europe. The first observation in Belgium took place in the Zeeschelde in October 1996. This amphipod only occurs in the brackish water of estuaries. It is remarkable that in the Western Scheldt the species occurs almost exclusively in association with hydroid polyps, a habitat hardly used by native amphipods.
